This model was originally created to outperform the typical “economy” carved basses on the market. The Standard Carved was designed to blow those away: a fully carved, American-made bass built here in our shop.

This example features poplar back and sides with a spruce top. The poplar back is constructed from a center plate with two wings, a technique we use frequently for its stability and tonal consistency.

It has bumpers, bridge adjusters, a RevSolo pickup, quiver, bag and bow, and a set of Evah Pirazzi strings (a bit tired at this point. Still fine under the bow, but darker than ideal for pizz). The neck is maple with German antiqued tuners, and a long, clean ebony fingerboard.

Tonally, the bass has a big, round presence. A fresh set of Spirocores, if you ask us, would wake it up even more. Alex Svensen recently bowed this bass for a video demo, which will be posted soon; he always comments on how much value these Standard Carved basses deliver.

The full outfit is $8,000, including all accessories. For anyone comparing this to older German shop basses or vintage instruments, this is a healthy, crack-free, stable carved bass that’s seven years old and fully broken in. It’s been well cared-for and will stay that way with proper attention to humidity (we recommend 45%).

As with all basses leaving our shop, we’ll put it on the bench for a personalized setup to suit your playing style. If you prefer a played-in instrument over a brand-new build, this bass offers the best of both worlds: mature wood, stable structure, and the reliability of a modern Upton.

Arnold Schnitzer & Upton Bass Ergo https://uptonbass.com/product/arnold-schnitzer-upton-bass-ergo/ https://uptonbass.com/product/arnold-schnitzer-upton-bass-ergo/#respond Thu, 02 Oct 2025 20:50:41 +0000 https://uptonbass.com/?post_type=product&p=177430 This 2020 instrument is a special collaboration between Upton Bass and Arnold Schnitzer, based on his innovative Ergo Model design. Built here in the Upton Bass workshop with Arnold’s forms, guidance, and input, this bass brings together two respected schools of bass making into a unique and highly responsive instrument.

Unlike traditional builds, the Ergo Model is intentionally asymmetrical, with carefully placed sound ports in the upper bout, distinctive F-holes, and dimensional adjustments that give it remarkable clarity and projection. The result is an instrument that looks as striking as it sounds—designed for serious performance, and stays true to both Arnold’s and our own high standards.

Finished in a warm amber varnish, this bass features a beautifully figured Haselfichte spruce top, big leaf maple back and sides with long flamed ribs, and a flamed maple neck. Outfitted with Rubner tuners, ebony fingerboard, and bumpers, it shows only light signs of playing wear.

This is an instrument priced far below a $40,000–$50,000 Schnitzer but still carrying the pedigree, sound, and playability that make his instruments so sought after. At $24,000, it represents an opportunity to own a distinctive, collaborative bass with exceptional character and versatility.

Whether you’re seeking a modern orchestral instrument (well suited for a C-extension), a strong solo voice, or a bass with amplified potential, the Ergo Model offers an exciting extension of what a double bass can be.

Upton Bass Klotz Double Bass https://uptonbass.com/product/upton-bass-klotz-double-bass/ https://uptonbass.com/product/upton-bass-klotz-double-bass/#respond Thu, 25 Sep 2025 03:14:56 +0000 https://uptonbass.com/?post_type=product&p=176782 This 2020 Upton Klotz Model Hybrid is a rare find, built as a custom “Gentleman Jazz Bass” and cared for meticulously by its first owner. Designed with amplified performance in mind, it delivers speed, playability, and tone fidelity that makes it a favorite for gigging jazz bassists.
The bass features a custom C-extension, rosewood tuners, and a striking flamed maple neck. The hand-scraped spruce top and durable hybrid construction with flamed maple laminate give it both strength and character. With a 40.5-inch string length and a slim, dainty neck, it is remarkably easy to play, almost as effortless as an electric bass.

This is not the bass to fill a symphony hall or anchor a section—it is built to be a responsive, expressive, amplified gig bass. Currently fitted with Spirocores, it has a brighter edge, though it can adapt beautifully to different string voices. Paired with the Realist Lifeline pickup, it shines in amplified settings with clarity and fidelity rivaling even the Full Circle or Rev Solo.

Built in 2020, this bass has had five years of excellent care and remains in outstanding condition. It is one of only a handful of these custom Klotz hybrids we have ever made. Offered at $12,500, including the $3,000 C-extension and custom upgrades, it is an ideal choice for the working jazz bassist who wants a fast, responsive, and easy-playing double bass.
Come play it, plug it in, and see if it’s your voice.
